Mastering the Art of Layering at Onitsuka Tiger’s Spring/Summer 2024 Show
Presented at Milan Fashion Week, the Japanese brand’s show focused on layering, manifested through detailed cut-outs, playful margins and asymmetric sleeves.
Asymmetry, cut-outs and gathers. That’s what floated down Onitsuka Tiger’s runway in Milan last week, during the unveiling of their Spring/Summer 2024 collection, as conceptualised by Creative Director Andrea Pompilio. Attended by Twice’s Momo, Willow Smith, Dew (aka Jirawat Sutivanisak), and more, the presentation garnered a lot of attention on social media when the brand sent a blimp promoting the runway show down the streets of Milan.
Since its creation back in 1949, the brand has been determined to intertwine the innovative spirit of sportswear with fashion. Much like the theme of the collection “Personal Layered”, the lineup from the Japanese brand calls attention to the details found on the pieces that allow the wearer to endlessly manipulate their looks to suit their personal style.
A signature approach of Onitsuka Tiger, the layering theme that grounds this collection is rooted in the brand’s desire to walk the line between modernity and easy elegance. Elegance is best achieved when one feels comfortable and confident, and this season’s womenswear and menswear pieces favour freedom and personal identity.
Subverting typical basics, the Spring/Summer 2024 collection was an exercise in craftsmanship. Tank tops received a touch of edge with side slits, and asymmetrical hems lined the bottoms of blouses and tops. The fabrics selected also play a key role in the collection, concealing and exposing the body in unexpected fashions. A see-through nylon knit softly unveils the skin underneath, and double-faced cotton augments the body with more structure.
This collection of layers, ties and cut-outs adopts a simple colour palette, allowing the finishes of the garments to really shine. Black, cement grey and sage green are the main pillars of the collection, but of course, they’re all united by Tiger Yellow, the brand’s distinct shade. In keeping with a truly Japanese aesthetic, the label also partnered with nowartt, a Japanese textile graphic brand founded in 2010 to create a floral print that made its way onto the runway. nowartt’s co-creation with Onitsuka Tiger takes inspiration from the four natural elements – earth, water, fire and wind – to produce a print that speaks of the peace of being in harmony with nature.
Beloved by many, the sneakers in the collection come in new designs, with various heights for different moods. High-cuts and ankle boots work great for dressier days, and the slip-ons will be a comfy fit for lazy errand days around town. Statement boots from the brand also come in black and Tiger Yellow, for unparalleled city-chic.
