The setting

The Capitoline Museum, one of the "Seven Hills" of the Eternal City, houses a collection of art and archaeology museums and holds a special place in Alessandro Michele's heart. Bringing the Gucci cruise 2020 collection over was an unarguable choice as the collection was inspired by ancient Rome and its political scene. Guests were given a package that contained an ancient book with a quote that read, "Only pagan antiquity awakened my desire, because it was the world of before, because it was an abolished world," by French historian and archeologist, Paul Veyne.

The theme

Alessandro Michele isn't shy about his opinions. The collection revolves around the freedom of choice, seeing extravagant pieces adorned with 'My Body My Choice' and “May 22, 1978,” the date when abortion was legalized in Italy. “The news I recently read in the newspaper made me reflect on the fact that women have to be respected. They should be considered as some men consider themselves,” Michele said. “They should be free to choose what they want. Terminating pregnancy is not going to uproot the flower that’s found in the womb of every woman. Choices are sometimes difficult in life. It’s the most difficult choice for a woman and I respect that choice.”Beyond the slogans, an image of the female reproductive system was embroidered on a pleated sundress - emphasizing the collection's motives.

The entertainment

Every Gucci cruise show, there is a musical legend to end it with a bang. After Elton John attended the show last year in Arles as a musical guest, Harry Styles and Stevie Nicks joined forces to pay tribute to Tom Petty with a cover of her duet with the late Heartbreakers frontman, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around" at the after-party. With 24.2 million Instagram followers, Harry Styles is Alessandro Michele's "partner-in-crime" at the Met Gala 2019 and has been the face of Gucci's tailoring campaign for the second time in a row.
