Disney+ is upping the ante in the medical thriller genre with Hyper Knife, a series that blends high-stakes surgery with even higher-stakes moral dilemmas. Starring Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, The King’s Affection) and Sul Kyung-gu (Memoir of a Murderer, Oasis), the show follows Jung Se-ok, a neurosurgeon whose unparalleled skill with a scalpel isn’t enough to shield her from betrayal. When her mentor, Choi Deok-hee, turns his back on her, she’s left to perform underground surgeries for the people society would rather forget—until he comes knocking for her help.

L'OFFICIEL SINGAPORE sat down with the cast to unpack the intricate character dynamics, the psychological undercurrents, and the emotional weight of Hyper Knife in the leads up to its March 19 premiere.

A Relationship Cut Open

At the heart of Hyper Knife is the complex, volatile relationship between Se-ok and Deok-hee. Sul Kyung-gu, who plays the once-revered mentor, describes their bond as both magnetic and destructive.

“It was because of that very complexity and emotion that I was drawn to this project,” he says. “The way admiration can curdle into hatred, love into resentment—it’s a fascinating transformation. These two characters are so deeply intertwined that they are the only ones who can truly understand and destroy each other.”

Park Eun-bin echoes this sentiment, acknowledging the push-and-pull of their dynamic. “They are mirror images of each other in some ways, but also complete opposites,” she explains. “Se-ok is straightforward and relentless, while Deok-hee is more reserved and introspective. And yet, they share this unspoken bond of knowing what it means to be the best and to have that taken away.”

Balancing the Chaos

While Se-ok and Deok-hee’s relationship is the core tension of the series, the supporting characters provide crucial balance. Yoon Chan-young (All of Us Are Dead) plays Young-ju, Se-ok’s closest ally, who serves as an emotional anchor amid her intensity.

“Rather than saying Young-ju is the ‘normal’ one, I think it’s more that Se-ok and Deok-hee are so far from ordinary that he ends up looking that way by comparison,” Yoon says with a laugh. “If Se-ok is the ‘minus,’ he’s the ‘plus.’ If she’s ‘South,’ he’s ‘North.’ They complement each other in ways that make sense even when they shouldn’t.”

Park Byung-eun (Kingdom, Lost) plays Hyun-ho, a key figure in Se-ok’s world of illicit surgeries. He describes his character as both a stabilizer and a wildcard.

“Se-ok and Deok-hee are fueled by rage, resentment, and ambition,” Park explains. “Hyun-ho is the one who grounds them—until he doesn’t. He’s not just there to be a voice of reason; he has his own motivations and isn’t afraid to stand his ground, even against Deok-hee.”

A Show With Bite

Penned by Kim Sun-hee (Quiz From God: Reboot) and directed by Kim Jung-hyun (After the Rain), Hyper Knife isn’t just about the adrenaline rush of surgery—it’s about the deep scars left by ambition, betrayal, and revenge.

“The emotions in this show are raw,” Park Eun-bin says. “It’s a uniquely Korean story, but I think its themes—power, loyalty, revenge—will resonate globally. I’m really curious to see how international audiences react to it.”

With its unflinching approach to morality and a scalpel-sharp script, Hyper Knife is set to be one of Disney+’s boldest Korean dramas yet. The series premiered March 19, with two episodes already delivering a ride as precise—and as dangerous—as the incisions Se-ok makes.

'Hyper Knife' is currently airing exclusively on Disney+.
