Will Smith Responds to Jada Pinkett Smith’s Announcement of Their Secret Separation
The Red Table Talk co-host recently disclosed that she and her husband have been separated for 7 years.
Revealed through the pages of Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir Worthy, the actress and talk show host divulged that she and Will Smith, her husband of 26 years, have actually been living completely separate lives for seven years. Now Will Smith has responded to Jada’s public confession of the couple’s separation for the first time since the news was revealed.
In an email to the New York Times, Will wrote, “When you've been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.” He spoke about how he had lost sight of his wife’s idiosyncrasies over the years, saying that he only now realised that Jada is “more resilient, clever and compassionate” than he had previously comprehended. This response came after Jada’s public announcement of the couple’s situation, publicised through the early release of Worthy.
The King Richard actor famously made headlines when he slapped Chris Rock during the Oscars last year after the comedian made a joke on stage about Jada’s shaved head. Jada has been shaving her head since 2021 due to her alopecia. After the physical entanglement, Will Smith shouted profanities at Chris Rock from his seat in the audience, warning him against making jokes about his wife. Jada recently shared that this public use of the word ‘wife’, awoke something in her and reminded her of the couple’s continuous partnership.
When asked why Jada and Will kept their separation under wraps for so many years, Jada shared that the couple is still figuring out how they want to work on their partnership as spouses. Jada stated that they both still share “a deep love for each other”, and are trying to see what the future looks like for them both.
