Going down the driveway of Artyzen Singapore, Artyzen Hospitality Group’s first hotel in South East Asia, the Cuscaden Road property quickly leaves an impression with its terracotta-hued façade and the lush and varied greenery — growing vertically, suspending from the sky garden, and embracing the entrance of the hotel. Notably, Artyzen Singapore occupies an estate that was previously known as Villa Marie, a mansion built in the 1940s by the late Tan Hoon Siang, who was known as a true botany enthusiast.

The lobby too is a nod to the former estate and Singapore’s urban garden reputation, with its floral patterns, high ceilings, and verdant columns that hang from above. Going back to that driveway, here’s a thoughtful touch that sets Artyzen apart: Its Courtesy Car, which provides a complimentary drop-off service to any destination around a 1.5km radius of the hotel. The property’s Terrace Suite, which we stayed in for two nights, is spacious with a statement, vaulted ceiling, as well as a full living area, and even a private sky garden. Much like most of Artyzen Singapore, the room’s decorations are eclectic-meets-modern, with bold and vibrant floral motifs, and a tasteful mix of Western, Chinese and Peranakan-style touches.

Soon enough, it was time to visit the hotel’s delightful dining destination, Quenino by Victor Liong (“Quenino” means “little one” in Malaccan Creole Portuguese) — born in Brunei to Malaysian Chinese parents and based in Australia, Liong’s blend of cultural experiences are the first indication that diners should expect no less than the unexpected. Our favourite dishes at the degustation menu-only restaurant: Baby Cucumber, with Caramelised Lemongrass Chilli; House-Made Flatbread with Chorizo XO; and Dry Aged Lacquered Duck with Sambal Ijo and Fermented Rice Pancakes.

Almost equally gratifying is the breakfast served at the property’s Café Quenino. For his or her dawn cup of joe, one may indulge in Singapore-style kopi or teh, Chai, or Italian coffees. The bites are as assorted as the beverages — choose from Eggs Your Way, Nasi Lemak, Chilli Crab Omelette, and Kaya French Toast. We were particularly enamoured with the Rolled Scallion and Egg Pancake, which features a house-made five spiced chicken ham.

For those who may have overindulged while staying at Artyzen Singapore (us definitely included), there’s always the 25-metre infinity pool at The Roof Garden, which overlooks lower-lying Orchard Road residential properties, as well as the Wellness and Workout zone on the fifth floor — think yoga and exercise pavilions, and a well-equipped gym — to turn to. The hotel even boasts its own Wellness & Workout Calendar — June’s and July’s schedule includes Flow & Release, Restorative Sound Meditation, and weekly classes such as HIIT and Vinyasa Yoga. Also located on this floor is the spa. Don’t be fooled by the modest two rooms — we had the opportunity to recharge and revitalise with an excellent 90-minute Yuan Qi treatment, which is a traditional Chinese and acupressure massage that focuses on one’s meridian points.
