Bollywood Classic, Devdas Gets the Broadway Musical Treatment
Making their world premiere in Esplanade Singapore, Devdas – The Musical brings one of the most famous love sagas in Indian literature to the stage
Considered a classic in Bollywood cinema, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas has not only won a slew of awards and was the highest grossing film in 2002 when it was released—More importantly it stood the test of time. From DVD releases to rereleases on major streaming platforms, the onscreen adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novella of the same name starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit continues to receive love from film lovers everywhere. That being said, it's timelessness is majorly attributed to the source material, Chattopadhyay’s epic story of star-crossed lovers and their tragic destiny which has inspired many artforms in multiple mediums. And now, Devdas receives the Broadway treatment with the premiere of Devdas – The Musical.
Devdas tells the story of tragic love triangle between the wealthy and pampered Devdas, his childhood friend and forbidden love interest Paro, and the courtesan Chandramukhi, exploring themes of love, social class, and the constraints of tradition and society. The theatrical interpretation of this tragic love story stars Bollywood and TV actors, Sunil Kumar Palwal as Devdas and Aanchal Chauhan, Bhavna Pani, Jayesh Thakkar and Smita Jaykar. The musical is brought to life by India's leading live theatre producer AGP World, along with Arte Compass and Zee TV APAC.
It makes its world premiere in Singapore at the Esplanade theatres on April 21 and promises an epic stage performance with lavish sets, vibrants costumes and exhilirating dance numbers. It will also feature songs from the original award-winning and much beloved soundtrack of the eponymous hit movie, as well as original tunes sung by some of the most prominent Bollywood singers including Shaan, Kailash Kher, Alka Yagnik, Suresh Wadkar, Shail Hada, Bhoomi Trivedi and Antara Mitra.
Devdas – The Musical premieres April 21 at the Esplanade Theatre with two shows in Hindi with English subtitles on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22, and two shows in English with Mandarin subtitles on Saturday, April 22 and on Sunday, April 23.
