Sportmax Looks Toward A Brighter Future For Fall 2020
2019 marked a milestone year for Sportmax as the storied label celebrated its 50th anniversary, but if the recent Fall 2020 show was anything to go by, the brand has no plans to slow down anytime soon. Indeed, creative director Grazia Malagoli dubbed the show “A Brighter Future”, as she sought to usher in exactly that with a collection that reprised classic house codes in unprecedented and unexpected ways.
Outerwear, always a hallmark of Sportmax design, took centre stage as coats and capes were updated with exaggerated shoulders, detachable collars, and unconventional rows of buttons. Coordinated separates, which have defined the Sportmax woman’s wardrobe since the very beginning, matched compact jackets and ruffled blouses with short skirts, flared trousers, and high-waisted shorts.
Sartorial techniques derived from the tuxedo were extended to strass-embellished velvet suits and a blazer dress with satin lapels, while fluid darted and ruched dresses put a twist on traditional tailoring with atypical layers and asymmetrical silhouettes. The looks were complemented by thigh-high leather boots with sculptural heels, ankle-strap sandals, waist-cinching belts, ultra-scenographic sunglasses, and long opera gloves.
Deep tones of black, navy blue, and grey mélange were punctuated by white, burgundy red, baby blue, and lucent silver. Delicate floral prints rendered in strass crystals, along with délabré upholstery-esque patterns and jacquard motifs, brought a touch of levity to the otherwise starkly futuristic feel of the collection.
