Onitsuka Tiger's Fall/Winter 2021 collection oozes new luxury. The brand, which is typically recognised for its signature sneakers, is currently under the helm of Italian designer Andrea Pompilio. This fusion of a classic Japanese label and a European mastermind embodies the "East Meets West" mentality of Onitsuka Tiger.

While conceptualising the Fall/Winter 2021 collection, Pompilio tapped Japanese textile designer Toyoki Adachi to create graphics for trousers, down jackets, and even its beloved tracksuit. This collision of skill and culture made for the perfect Milan Fashion Week debut.

The collection, titled Unfashionshow, combines minimalist design elements with pops of colour that are reminiscent of 1970s trekking. This blend of simplicity and the gorpcore phenomenon is ideal for fashionable mountaineers. The collection also includes special fleeces which are decorated with nylon radzimir inlays and contrasting vintage piping.

There is an evident focus on materials throughout the collection, which reflects the brand's penchant outfitting for cold weather, quality craftsmanship, and detail. Pompilio found inspiration within the colours of the Himalayas and consequentially included vivid oranges, yellows, and blues throughout the collection.

His artistry proves that there is always a place for functionality within fashion.

Onitsuka Tiger's move to Milan Fashion Week embodies its choice to set down roots in Europe. The brand has exclusively presented at Tokyo Fashion Week in the past, but in the wake of its first flagship store opening in Milan, the change in location felt like the natural next step. Onitsuka Tiger's growing presence within the luxury realm certainly reflects high fashion's fascination with function, a practicality that is hopefully here to stay.
