Dior Takes Men’s Pre-Fall 2019 to Tokyo
Marrying utilitarianism and luxury is no easy feat, so when Kim Jones centers Dior Men's Pre-Fall 2019 Collection around sensuous tailoring and more technical fabrics, we take note. Currently, in his second year in the role, Jones marked another first for the brand: staging the show in Tokyo, Japan.
The collection was riddled with cultural references to Japan’s fashion legacy and contemporary landscape. Pieces were riddled with Dior material mainstays, such as powder pinks and woolen houndstooth patterns. Coats and open front blazers sans-lapel pay homage to the traditional Japanese kimono, while also riffing on the structured shoulder of the western approach to suiting.
The set’s centerpiece, featuring a massive, metallic female figure, was the work of Japanese contemporary artist Hajime Sorayama. Japanese culture’s many facets have long inspired the fashion pack, who took to the city earlier this week for Valentino’s co-ed pre-fall show. As for how the capital city will continue to inform and inspire global fashion, only time will tell.
