Burberry Celebrates 17 Years of Soundtracks With a New Playlist
Ahead of his swansong Burberry show on 17 February, Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey has curated a playlist dedicated to his biggest source of inspiration: music. Available exclusively on Apple Music, the 17 Years of Soundtracks playlist is a testament to Burberry's special bond with music since 2001, when Bailey first joined.
Under his tutelage, the British brand has seen many a runway show complemented by a standout soundtrack, as well as events graced by the presence of a performing artist. And let's not forget the brand's collaborations with musicians themselves, the most recent being with Chinese-Canadian singer Kris Wu.
Many of these tracks and artists feature on the playlist, which already boasts over 200 songs. Still, the playlist is a work-in-progress: Burberry will be adding more songs from Bailey's final Burberry show later this week.
“17 Years of Soundtracks is the perfect way to celebrate the incredible roster of musicians who have helped shape my time at Burberry... This patchwork of tracks is a musical tribute to Burberry’s past, present and future.” — Christopher Bailey
From the current tracklist, it's clear that the designer has a rather eclectic taste. There's everything from pop (courtesy of Adele, Elton John, and Marina and the Diamonds) to post-punk (think Joy Division, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees), as well as a good dose of classic rock anthems by David Bowie, Queen and The Rolling Stones.
The playlist also celebrates Burberry's heritage by championing British musicians, in particular those who have collaborated with the brand and performed at Burberry Live events. That includes Alison Moyet, Paloma Faith, Benjamin Clementine, James Bay (right), George Ezra and Tom Odell — all of whom also feature in a new series of interviews as a part of Burberry's 17 Years of Soundtracks project.
Available on Burberry's Youtube channel, the interviews delve into each musician's passion for their art and their personal experiences from collaborating with Burberry.
