Take A Closer Look At The First Wave Of The Louis Vuitton x Nigo LV² Collection
When Louis Vuitton teased a forthcoming partnership between artistic director Virgil Abloh and streetwear legend Nigo last December, there was no doubt that it would be the hottest collaboration of 2020. And now, after months of eager anticipation, the wait is finally over, because the first LV² (or Louis Vuitton Squared) drop arrives in stores and online today.
Fusing the aesthetic sensibilities of the two visionaries, the expectation-defying capsule of ready-to-wear and accessories is less streetwear and more Savile Row, reflecting Nigo’s early fascination with British subcultures as well as the sartorial elegance Abloh has been promulgating in his recent menswear outings. Think mod-era London dandies seen through a Tokyo lens.
Central to the collection is an intriguing patchwork motif, created by “melting” the LV Monogram over Damier checks with a drip effect reminiscent of Nigo’s previous work for Ice Cream. The pattern is rendered in denim on jackets, trousers, and bob hats through the use of cut-outs, embroidery, and printing, and in leather on the Keepall Bandoulière, Soft Trunk, Campus Backpack, and Amazone Messenger.
The dedicated LV² logo appears on a range of everyday wear options, including a grey sweatshirt, a black zip-through hoodie, and a gold chain necklace. Accessories and small leather goods, on the other hand, are accented with adorable animal graphics such as a duck, a turtle, and a polar bear, all inscribed with the words “LV Made” — a reference to Nigo and his Human Made signature, but reinterpreted à la Louis Vuitton.
