TeamLab Borderless to Reopen at Azabutai Hills in January 2024
Discover the reimagined exhibition at Azabutai Hills, Tokyo's new iconic destination.
When discussing the fusion of technology and art, Japan's pioneering force, TeamLab, invariably emerges. Founded in 2001 by five enterprising graduate students from the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology, TeamLab remains dedicated to pioneering innovative projects spanning diverse realms like mobile applications, spatial design, advertising, and stage design. Their multidisciplinary team comprises engineers, mathematicians, architects, artists, website and graphic designers, and CG animators, forming an unparalleled collective.
Among its array of long-term exhibitions in Japan, TeamLab Planets Tokyo in Toyosu District has drawn substantial attention since its opening in 2018. However, the standout has undoubtedly been TeamLab Borderless. Unveiled in 2018 in Odaiba, Tokyo, this museum beckons visitors into an endlessly expansive and diverse world, magnetizing approximately 2.3 million visitors in its inaugural year alone.
Following its closure last year, many enthusiasts lamented their missed opportunity to experience TeamLab Borderless. Fortunately, the recent official announcement heralds its return, this time housed within Tokyo's latest landmark, "Azabutai Hills." Coinciding with the grand inauguration of Azabutai Hills on November 24 this year, TeamLab Borderless is poised to welcome global visitors anew come January 2024.
Accompanying the announcement, a series of trailers showcasing thrilling and breathtaking images and concepts have been released. The revamped space promises an expanded array of artworks, enabling patrons to seamlessly traverse and immerse themselves in the fluid transitions between pieces, crafting an authentically boundaryless sensory escapade.
TeamLab's creations transcend mere aesthetics, delving into the interplay between individuals and the world while challenging conventional perceptions. Among the upcoming additions, the "Sea of Clouds," "Birth," and "The Sculpture of Time Distortion in a Mirror" series of light sculptures are slated to debut. Additionally, the crowd-favorite "Microcosmoses" will make a triumphant return, ensuring a reinvigorated experience for all attendees.
