Valli Girls: H&M X Giambattista Valli

Even with 15 years of designer collaborations under the belt, H&M continues to strike gold with its waitlist worthy, high-street meets high-fashion collections. The latest to send fashionistas into a frenzy? Paris-based, Italian-born couturier Giambattista Valli, known and loved for his flamboyant, feminine, and frothy confections. The collaboration was announced earlier this year at the amFAR Gala in Cannes, where the designer appeared alongside his muses – including Kendall Jenner, Chiara Ferragni, and Chris Lee – all dressed in a taste of the (fabulous) things to come.

Now, the wait is almost over, as the full collection is due to be released next month, fronted again by It-girl Kendall Jenner. With the exception of a few statement gowns replete with the floaty tulle layers and flouncy silhouettes that are the hallmark of the designer’s aesthetics, the rest of the collection is surprisingly wearable for the everyday.

Hoodies, dresses, jackets, denim, and more are given the Valli treatment with floral motifs, pearl embellishments, ruffles, and diaphanous fabrics. A playful touch is added with prints of lips and hearts, as well as ‘love’ lettering, echoing the youthful spirits of both fashion houses. The collaboration presents Valli’s first foray into menswear, which, far from being a second thought, is just as vibrant and effervescent. The same floral motifs and romantic patterns are splashed across the creations, along with Baroque-style embroidery and animal prints. The androgynous feel of the collection reflects the idea that the Valli man could raid his partner’s wardrobe and make the pieces his own, and vice versa. “I like to remove the etiquette surrounding he and she, and think about creativity and freedom,” Valli explained.
