The Savoir Faire Behind the Stunning Louis Vuitton Looks at Vanity Fair's Oscar Party
A behind-the-scenes look at the exquisite craftsmanship that went into Cynthia Erivo, Renate Reinsve and Sophie Turner's gorgeous outfits for Vanity Fair's Oscar After Party.
Cynthia Erivo
Contemporary-futuristic Victorian glamour comes to mind with Cynthia Erivo's structured high neck bodysuit and knit skirt ensemble. Featuring a sleek, minimalistic black halter turtleneck neckline on the bodysuit, the exaggerated hip on the skirt was cleverly constructed by inserting a pillow inside the skirt for extra volume.
Cinched at the waist, the structured, voluminous skirt created a dramatic silhouette that perfectly juxtaposed the fitted nature of the top. Beautifully blending new-world minimalism with a subtle hint of the opulent, Victorian Era ball gowns, 120 hours went into assembling the skirt, with a further 250 hours to hand-embroider the skirt with mini square sequins. The twinkle of the mini-paillettes created a spectacular, metallic sheen, giving the look an almost surreal, celestial vibe.
Renate Reinsve
A total of 200 hours went into assembling Renate Reinsve's 1920s feel custom-made gown and a further 350 hours went into the hand embroidery. Crafted in a silk mousseline, the shimmery, silvery-champagne hues of the dress coupled with an art-deco-esque shell-fan motif hinted at the grandeur of the roaring '20s, while the elegant draping of the cowl neck (at the front and back) coupled with a long, embroidered cape, evoked a sense of Grecian goddesses.
Two fully embroidered necklaces on the shoulders completed the dress, further enhancing the goddess feel by adding a touch of regalia. Though seemingly old-world, a touch of sexy, modern allure appeared in its skirt. Two long strips of fabric, one at the front and one at the back, were layered over a mini dress, creating a chic, contemporary silhouette that showed off the legs.
Sophie Turner
Crisp yet extravagant, Sophie Turner's statement-making, bright red ball gown took over 200 hours to assemble. The custom-made, silk, long-sleeved gown featured a high neckline and long sleeves with white zipper details. A sculpted skirt with 8 rolled pleats created a decadent, imposing shape, rising from the waist down while white zipper details in the middle of the back, at the end of the sleeves and at the front side, coupled with a ski-suit-esque neckline, evoked a sportswear feel against the bold red. The unique addition of exposed zippers lent a trendy, sporty edge to the gown, creating an interesting contrast to the more classic, princessy, full-skirted ball gown silhouette of the skirt.
