Panthère de Cartier Makes the Perfect Day-to-Night Bag
Precious yet wholly practical, the new Panthère de Cartier chain bag leaps forward in an array of striking colours.
The panther made its debut at Cartier way back in 1914 when the animal’s spots decorated a women’s watch. Later on in 1960, the Maison released a gold lamé fabric pouch with sapphire and diamond panther heads positioned at the ends of a gold and platinum closure system.
Fast forward to 2022, the house presents its latest creation inspired by the big cat: the Panthère de Cartier chain bag. Supple, gently curved, and with no visible seams, the modern day-to-night style — that can be worn cross-body or over the shoulder — was designed to embody the Maison’s favourite feline in fluid motion.
Of course, the chain bag wouldn’t be complete without its own panther-influenced detail: the clasp, which comes in the form a graphic panther head designed in collaboration with a high jewellery sculptor. Marlin Yuson, Cartier’s Director of Accessory and Leather Goods Design, says: “It is through this jewellery clasp that this encounter between the wild and the precious takes place. It synthesises the combined expertise of jewellery and leather. Like an extension of femininity, demanding and refined.”
The Panthère de Cartier chain bag comes in two sizes, and in seven colours including black, petrol blue, red, beige and pale yellow.
