London Fashion Week Goes Fur-Free for Spring
No more fur, no more fire: earlier on Friday, the British Fashion Council announced that no designers showing during next week’s London Fashion Week will be using fur in their collections. The news comes a day following Burberry’s announcement that they will no longer be burning excess garments and are excluding fur (with the exception of shearling) from their upcoming collection, Riccardo Tisci's first for the top-tier British house.
The survey conducted by the BFC was part of their Positive Fashion initiative, which encourages designers to be conservative in their use of materials. The news also follows a wave of anti-fur protests outside various London Fashion Week venues over the past few seasons. It also lengthens the list of fur-free designers, as other luxury houses Versace, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo, and Gucci have sworn off the material in recent seasons.
While the United Kingdom has outlawed fur production, the BFC has yet to officially ban the use of the material. As for which cities and designers are next to get in on the fur-free fun, only time will tell.
