Maria Grazia Chiuri on Surrealism and the Art of Illusion

Dior's Artistic Director reveals the inspiration behind the Spring/Summer 2018 haute couture collection

“Only the inevitable theatricality of my life interests me.” – Leonor Fini

When the worlds of modern art and haute couture collide, the result is a projection of otherworldliness and optical illusion. For Dior's Spring/Summer 2018 haute couture collection, Artistic Director Maria Grazia Chiuri immersed herself in heart of Surrealism – giving rise to a collection suspended between dream and reality. Above all else, it is the artist Leonor Fini who defines the collection's strict yet radical attitude: severe yet elegant; real yet mysterious; stark yet whimsical.

In the video below, Chiuri reveals how the Surrealist art movement – and in particular, Surrealist artist Fini – played a pivotal role in Monsieur Dior's life.
