Here Comes The Sun: Louis Vuitton's Spring/Summer 2020 Accessories Collection
Winter is probably the season you most commonly associate with scarves, but Louis Vuitton would beg to differ. The humble scarf is, in fact, the unexpected hero (or heroine) of the label’s recently-unveiled Spring/Summer 2020 Accessories Collection. Whether tied around the waist, woven in the hair, looped around the arm or wrist, or wrapped around the handle of a bag (Louis Vuitton optional but strongly advised), silk becomes playfully versatile in the expert hands of the luxury house. Better yet, if you’re still not quite over the logomania trend, there is more monogram madness from the maison this season, with nearly every piece in the collection bedecked in the brand’s iconic insignia.
Taking cues from street art and children’s storybooks, the kaleidoscopic ABC print comes to life on a silk bandeau, silk squares, a jacquard shawl, and a silk blend stole. Effervescent and whimsical, each letter of the Louis Vuitton name is reinvented as a totem and matched with a symbolic animal or character, such as L for leopard, U for unicorn, N for narwhal, and of course, V for Vivienne, the charming Louis Vuitton mascot.
Like a genealogy tracing the pedigree of the French house, the Tree of Louis sprawls across a silk carré, a cashmere and silk shawl, and a silk bandeau. Amidst the twisting branches and delicate foliage are depicted the quintessential designs from the maison’s 166-year-long history, ranging from leather goods like the Alma, Keepall, and Noé to shoes like the Archlight sneakers to perfumes and other accessories.
Nature also serves as the inspiration behind the new Confidential Garden print, wherein a mélange of budding blooms, the house monogram, and chain and padlock motifs (in reference to the label’s trunk-making heritage) come together to form a motley flowerbed in a vivid array of pink, red, and brown. A slightly more understated, but no less arresting, version showcases the Monogram Confidential patchwork in black and white, overlaid with straps, chains, and locks in aureate hues.
A selection of bandeaus splashed with the brightly-coloured plumes of Love Birds and the earth tones of the LV World pattern round out the silk chapter of the series, along with the refreshed Monogram shawl in fluorescent shades of neon green and hot pink.
Standout scarves aside, there are plenty more winsome wares to love (and to splurge on) in the collection. Take the Party Palm Springs bracelet, for instance. We’ve rhapsodised about it before, but the adorable accessory definitely deserves another turn in the spotlight. The ultra-miniature version of an existing backpack design, the calf leather Party Palm Springs can be strapped around the upper arm or wrist, and is just about big enough for earphones and a couple of credit cards, making it the ideal companion for all the music festivals lined up in the months ahead.
Other lustworthy items include gold-rimmed sunglasses with monogram-embossed or gradient lenses, a Tie The Knot belt stamped with the Louis Vuitton Midnight logo, a silicone and canvas Louise phone holder, orb-shaped Planète LV earrings, and Nanogram bracelets, earrings, and hair clips in silver- or gold-tone hardware.
For Spring/Summer 2020, Louis Vuitton has tapped social media stars Aleali May, Aimee Song, Devon Carlson, and Marie von Behrens to model its latest offerings. In the playful campaign, the four trendsetters show off the endless possibilities of the silk accessories, featuring styles like the “uptown knot”, the “chateau twist”, the “bunny hop”, the “feather cuff”, and more.
