Following their earlier collaboration on Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2020 lookbook, Alessandro Michele and legendary photographer Bruce Gilden have joined forces once again to release a new art book, titled Beaten & Blown by the Wind. Showcasing previously unseen photographs from the Pre-Fall 2020 shoot, which saw Gilden capture the season’s looks on a diverse cast of models against the backdrop of Rome’s roadsides, riverbanks, and ruins, the limited edition tome is a daring expression of the eclectic vision shared by the two trailblazing creatives, and surely the must-have addition to your coffee table collection.

One of the most renowned street photographers in the scene with a career spanning several decades, Gilden has made a name for himself with his starkly candid, unflinching depictions of everyday life in the city. He brings his uncompromising style to Beaten & Blown by the Wind, in which the denizens of Rome are immortalised alongside the likes of Bethann Hardison, Benedetta Barzini, and Achille Lauro in high contrast, black and white portraits that seem to lay bare their souls.

“I had never made a book this way before,” Gilden comments. “Having Rome as the backdrop was great, the city really inspires me – the beauty of the architecture and its age and watching how the Roman people move around their unique surroundings, as well as discovering the statues in the park high above Rome that mix with beautiful clouds, and the panorama of the city below… it all lent itself for some good pictures.”

“Bruce is a beautiful person with a poetic gaze on humanity,” says Alessandro MIchele. “We share the same passion for faces and an obsession with expressions, personalities, and looks. I am a great collector of portraits because the human figure is central for me. Working with a photographer means seeing through someone else’s eyes and it was wonderful to see through Bruce’s eyes. I felt like I was looking at things under a microscope in a science laboratory.”
