Doublet Take

We met up with the Japanese label's designer Masayuki Ino at Dover Street Market Singapore, and got the lowdown on his latest collection, 'Surprise!'

How did you get into fashion?

When I was in high school, vintage fashion was all the rage. I used to scour the shops to find the best pieces, and that's how I got into it.

What made you want to start your own label?

Before establishing Doublet in 2012, I worked at MIHARAYASUHIRO. Because Mihara was the designer, he was the one who called the shots. I decided to start my own label so I would have no limits to what I wanted to do.

How would you describe your design ethos?

What's important to me is to bring humour into my designs.

What was your inspiration for this 'Surprise!' collection?

While I was designing this collection, I experienced many surprises in my own life. I wanted my customers to also experience this sense of surprise, and using horror was the easiest way to do so.

Given the horror references in this collection, what are some of your favourite horror films?

Stephen King's It and The Shining, and the Japanese film, Ring.

Having won the LVMH prize last year, has Doublet changed in any way?

Of course! Many more people got to know about Doublet, and now people look and think differently about the way we do things.

What are you working on next?

I'm working on my Fall/Winter 2020 collection now, as well as some collaborations.
