The beauty of luxury and creative grandeur is often associated with Haute Couture: One-of-a-kind made-to-measure garments that offer exquisite and impeccable extravagance, often spanning 300 to 1000 hours to complete a single look. Living up to its astonishing savoir-faire, the looks are often articulated by hand.

With its elaborate hard work, the skilled artisans transform a piece of garment into a showpiece of luxury, accounting for its astronomical price tags. In order for a fashion house to be deemed as a Couture Maison, the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode establishes its members and qualifies those who exhibit qualities of traditional know-how and contemporary finesse. As the number of artisans is slowly contracting alongside the diminishing market for couture, luxury houses hone the hallmarks of Haute Couture to bring forward the legacy and heritage of prestigious fashion.

This Fall, several prominent fashion labels have shown on the Haute Couture runway, offering eminent distinctions from the Ready-To-Wear collections; this time, with a more intricate and delicate approach. Wowing the audiences and fashion onlookers, the brands presented masterful pieces of art, bearing detailed embroideries and embellishments.

Here, we take a more in-depth glance into its craftsmanship through the lens of the designer’s precision and keen eye for design.

Chanel

Precision to the most minute of details; Chanel stands at the forefront of harnessing the skills and qualities of intricate craftsmanship. This Fall, the house presented a collection of graphic silhouettes nuanced with sequin embellishments.

With their strong technicalities in embroideries, Chanel utilised pink and white sequins to create an illusion of stripe-like patterns on the dress. Taking the design up a notch, the atelier added a myriad of floral embellished jewels as a signature to the house.
Marrying savoir-faire and geometric patterns, Virginie Viard designed a dress with metallic sequins varying in size and colours, revealing a fractal geometric pattern across a glimmering surface.

Dior

Maria Grazia Chiuri fronts and centres craftsmanship for Dior’s Fall/Winter 2022 Haute Couture collection. Rich in folkloric references, the runway was punctuated with Ukrainian-folk-inspired embroideries. We saw the emblematic code reinterpreted in various forms.

An encrypted message behind the Ukrainian inspired embroideries lies in its cultural and sacred character. The hand-woven cross stitch and floral motifs impresses with its beauty and diversity. Reserved in a pale colour palette, the contrast with the white and navy stitches takes its construction to new heights.
Inspired by the ‘Tree of Life’ emblem suggested by Ukranian artist Olesia Trofymenko, the embroidery echos the roots, stems and branches of a tree to create a motif that takes cues from Ukrainian folklore.

Fendi

Working with the concept of unbearable lightness and purity, Kim Jones presents an elegant and feminine collection. Flashes of shimmer offer a dreamlike experience, showcasing Fendi’s beguiling adversity of glamour and simplicity.

Sleek, supple and intricate. As Jone stems his inspiration from French “Japonisme”, the dress features minute embellishments that mirrors Japanese Botanical Prints and maple leaves in an expressive and intricate manner.
