4 Must-Have Accessories from Milan Fashion Week
The Fall/Winter collections at Milan Fashion week put some scrumptious accessories down the runway. From stunningly unique bags to fun heels and delightful jewellery, here are our picks for some of this season's must-have accessories.
Textured Bags
Step aside smooth leather, it's texture from here on out. From Fendi to Salvatore Ferragamo and Bottega Veneta, the bags at Milan Fashion Week were all about the texture. Like items of clothing, each bag embodies its own individual spirit, making statement bags a great way to add a little personality to a look. Icy slate grey and luxurious, jewel-toned sapphire hued furs, beautiful, vintage feel pastel embroidery, crocodile print in a more traditional black and tan and even an adorable, rattan weave dressed some of the most darling bags for the Fall/Winter season.
Milan Fashion Week's Fall/Winter shows also saw the return of Bottega Veneta's classic, Intrecciato weave. A statement texture if there ever was one, the House's original, signature smaller weave brought beautiful depth and dimension to a number of bags including the new, seamless, Kalimero bag that opened the show. With fashion's current obsession with logos, the Intrecciato weave is unique in the sense that it addresses the logo trend without actually having a glistening, hardware logo present. This is one motif that is instantly recognisable anywhere.
The Lariat Necklace
Designed by Delfina Delettrez, the lariat necklace or "y" necklace was seen on several looks at the Fendi show. With its longer silhouette and elongated drop chain, these dreamy, understatedly glamourous necklaces hinted lightly at the 1920s and were the perfect complement to the feminine, semi-sheer ruffles and lower v-necklines in the collection. Featuring small, Fendi "F" motif drop pendants strung from elegant, barely-there, gold chains, the necklaces at the Fendi show were sophisticated yet minimalist, exuding that quiet, Italian luxe glamour that personifies the brand.
The lariat necklace doesn't just pair well with lower necklines, they can make an elegant statement when layered over higher necklines, elongating the neck and adding a subtle hint of the old world, retro-glam to a look. For a little more drama, the lariat necklace can also be layered with a choker to create a vastly different aesthetic. The show featured a darker-hued choker teamed with a lighter, ethereal gold lariat necklace, the mix was a beautiful contrast of soft and hard that played beautifully with the contrasting textures, colours and fabrics in the collection.
Chokers
A hot accessory this season, choker-style necklaces were spotted at both the Fendi and Salvatore Ferragamo shows. The choker is an excellent accessory to invest in as it works with various outfits and necklines. Depending on the style and design, chokers can also help lend vastly different aesthetics to a look. The chokers at the Fendi show were chic, delicate and perfectly on-trend with the current logo obsession, featuring the Fendi "F" motif. Two variations are featured in the show, perfectly complimenting the two distinct styles. A gold base with dazzling bright white stones evoked an icy minimalism, perfectly complementing the floaty, fairy-esque pastel chiffon ensembles while a gold base with black stones added an edgy, almost grunge-glamour to the deeper toned looks.
At the Ferragamo show, chunkier, statement chokers featured in an interlocking chain-like pattern. Dressed in tan leather with stitching detail on the exterior, these hinted at the western Americana trend that has been fast gaining popularity. The great thing about chokers is that though they work beautifully with lower necklines, they can also be layered over higher necklines for cold-weather dressing. At the Salvatore Ferragamo show, the statement tan choker was seen teamed with a soft, peachy coral turtleneck. The warm hues in the tan blended perfectly with the warm hues of coral, creating a strikingly contrasting and unique look. Blending the softness of peach with the more rugged, old western feel of the choker.
Chunky Heels
Talk about a statement shoe, chunky heels were the name of the game in a number of collections, including Fendi and Bottega Veneta's. Chunkier heels and platform heels have been returning to the runways and these collections presented a contemporary spin on these rather retro silhouettes.
At the Fendi show, the trending theme of logos appeared in a rather interesting, slightly quirky yet extremely contemporary presentation. The Fendi "FF" motif was seen carved into the block heels of stunningly elegant pumps that featured a softer, rounded front and slim, dainty straps. For an edgier option, the "FF" carved heel was also spotted on pair of sultry, black leather boots. These understatedly chic heels are definitely one to wear if you've been looking to get with the logo trend in a more subtle fashion.
For those who love a bit of, or in this case, a lot of drama, Bottega Veneta has got you covered with an almost avant-garde shoe that is sure to make a statement in any outfit. The uniquely curved, block heel featured a raised platform and chunky buckles. Dressed in stunning hues like deep burgundy and a vivaciously vibrant orchid purple, this deliciously fresh new shape is sure to make a bold statement in any outfit.
The unique, curved block heel was also seen on a pair of a gorgeous, wardrobe staple, high black boots adorned with Bottega's signature, Intrecciato weave. Personifying understated chic, the weave added movement and texture to the classic black boot while the unique shape and high cut provided an excellent canvas to show off the truly artisanal pattern from every angle.
