Here's Why Emily Ratajkowski's Latest Instagram Post Is Raising Concerns
On Saturday, insta-famous model Emily Ratajkowski posted a semi-naked photo on Instagram to promote a loungewear outfit from her label, Inamorata. What everyone noticed, was her extremely flat and toned belly, regardless of the fact that she had just had her son a few days before, on March 8th. It's not the first time that Ratajkowski has become the centre of a social media storm.
The model is often accused of promoting an ideal of unattainable beauty, decidedly far removed from reality and the idea of body positivity, for which she advocates for. Moreover, many criticise her for perpetuating unrealistic body image standards.
Academic Professor Marika Tiggemann explained why this Instagram post caused negative reactions.
“The fact of the matter is that most people don’t look like that after they’ve given birth, because most people don’t look like that before they’ve given birth, either,” Professor Tiggemann said.“And we find the research says that looking at unrealistically thin, idealised images basically just makes women feel bad about their own bodies.”
So, sharing a photo of yourself, in which your body look good, can make other people feel bad with themselves and in some cases even have a negative impact on the mental health of someone.
But the questions remains open: is it right or wrong that a public figure, with a large number of followers, shares pictures of...well, their reality and life? No matter how unattainable it may seem?
