2023 has seen a twist in K-drama where plotlines go deep into darker territories and the latest trending series is Death's Game, which has just premiered on Prime Video on 15th December 2023.
Split into two parts (the later to premier on January 5, 2024), Death's Game is a gripping and dark adaptation of a popular Korean webtoon of the same name, where the story zooms in on Choi Yee-jae (Seo In-guk) who wants to give up on life and made a passing remark ridiculing Death.
Death (Park So-dam) then punishes him to being reincarnated through 12 different lives and Yee-jae must stop the imminent deaths of his reincarnations.
THE CAST
One of the core reasons you need to watch this series is because of its cast of actors and actresses. Arguably the most star-studded cast to featured in a single series this year, the story sees the appearance of Seo In-guk, Park So-dam, Kim Ji-hoon, Choi Si-won, Sung Hoon, Jang Seung-jo, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Do-hyun, Go Youn-jung, Kim Jae-uck and more.
Each outstanding talents who can lead a drama to success, you are guaranteed with immersive acting that will leave you breathless at every plot turn.
Director Ha Byung-hoon shared, “I started working on the script in January of last year. While writing it, I had specific actors in mind. I thought about which actors I wanted to work with and actors who would elicit a response about how good the casting is.”
THE PLOT
Unlike most dramas that centre around on one fixed setting, Death's Game will take you into 13 different world/atmosphere where each of the leading cast will bring a different flavour and vibe to the plot.
From being an heir to a conglomerate (Choi Si-won) to an extreme sports athlete (Sung-hoon) and a highshool student suffering from extreme bullying (Kim Kang-hoon), each live takes a different turn to let Choi Yee-jae learn his lesson and survive the reincarnation's death or risk being condemned to Hell by Death.
Director Ha says, "I think we wanted to make scenes realistic and this sets us apart from the webtoon. For example, the skydiving scene, the fighting scenes, and the motorcycle scenes are all real. They could look like CG, but the actors really filmed them.”
Sung Hoon adds, “I actually jumped about 13 times when filming the skydiving scene", while Jang Seung-jo mentioned, “There are a lot of scenes where I ride a motorcycle, so I got a license."
THE RETURN OF PARK SO-DAM AND SEO IN-GUK
Playing the leading role in the series, we are exceptionally excited for the return of Park So-dam and Seo In-guk to the TV screen. Both acclaimed actors who have captured our hearts from their previous roles (how can we forget So-dam's iconic role in Parasite and the witty In-guk in Cafe Minamdang?).
On Death's Game, Park So-dam says, “As you watch our series, I think you’ll be able to gradually talk about your lives with the people around you. I think it will make you think about your daily lives and who you are as a person.”
Seo In-guk adds, "For me, the wire action was tough because of my fear. And in the scenes between myself and Death, it was physically very draining both while acting and when I was prepping for the scene because of the emotional depth."
