The legacy of ‘Money Heist’ has finally come to an end with the last five episodes of Season 5 now streaming on Netflix. To celebrate this accomplishment, the cast and crew of the cult-favourite show – including protagonists Álvaro Morte, Itziar Ituño, Najwa Nimri, Úrsula Corberó, and more turned up for one last reunion at the show’s final premiere last night.

The stars also took to Instagram following the event to thank the fans for their continued support. Morte, who plays the elusive Professor, captioned his post with, “Thank you all, you’ll be always in my heart.” Following that, Ituño, who plays Raquel Murillo/Lisboa on the show also gave her thanks to fans: “Thanks to everyone for being there, giving meaning to our work. It has been an amazing trip! It gives me great joy too, comrades, to have seen you again and to have walked this path by your side. I do not say goodbye but “see you later.” I love you.” Just two of the many heartfelt words exchanged during the end of their journey.

Paving the way for the success of foreign shows on streaming platforms like the ever-so-popular ‘Squid Game’ that came out earlier this year, ‘Money Heist’ proved that there was and still is a demand for non-western media internationally. It was “one of the first shows that truly opened up and levelled fiction from a global perspective,” says Netflix’s vice-president of content for Spain and Portugal, Diego Ávalos. “It solidified the position of Spain as a true leader in the audiovisual space – particularly in fiction.” No small feat considering the variety of shows, films, and other forms of media available for audiences out there.

If you refresh your memory and think back to when ‘Money Heist’ first gained popularity amongst the mass public, you’d remember that one year where the streets were filled with thousands dressing up in the gang’s iconic red jumpsuits and vendetta masks during Halloween. And that’s not all when it comes to the cultural phenomenon of the show. Many also took to actively learning the Spanish language to continue following it in its native tongue throughout the seasons and joined ‘Money Heist’ communities like Twitter and Instagram fandoms, Reddit groups, and more to discuss the show over the years. It is clear that though the show is officially ending, the legacy of its impact lives on through its fans.

And Netflix knows this. Following Season 5, two new shows are officially in the works within the ‘Money Heist’ universe – a spin-off staring Pedro Alonso (who plays Berlin) premiering in 2023 and a Korean adaptation starring Squid Game’s Park Hae-soo coming next year.

As Ituño’s put it, this is not a goodbye, but a “see you later,” and we can’t wait to see what else is in store for our favourite gang of robbers following the series finale of ‘Money Heist’.

All episodes of 'La Casa de Papel' are now streaming on Netflix.
