Journey Through the Facets of Europe at the 2022 European Film Festival

Presenting 24 films from 23 different countries, this year's European Film Festival offerings invite you to explore the region's diversity and rich, multi-faceted cultural heritage through the distinct lens of each country.

Presented by the European Union Delegation to Singapore, the much anticipated European Film Festival returns to Singapore's shores from the 12th to the 26th of May, bringing with it the best of contemporary European cinema. Representative of the unique individual character of each specific country, the films showcased seek to send a message of how we are united in our humanity, serving as a reflection of Europe’s diversity, inclusivity, and solidarity. 

Iwona Piórko, European Union Ambassador to Singapore, says: “Cinema reminds us of our humanity and demonstrates to us how our lives are interconnected. We present this year’s EUFF in a difficult time. We stand in solidarity with Ukraine by opening the festival with the multiple award-winning Ukrainian film, 'Mother of Apostles'. This movie, like several others on our programme, celebrates universal values of peace, freedom, and human dignity.” 

Immerse yourself in the various diverse cultures that span the region with 23 exquisite films from Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine. Carefully selected, the films that will be screened are recent and have had immense success in their country of origin and often, internationally. 

The Films

Presenting a range of movie genres to suit your desired film fancies, films in the drama category include Belgium’s 'All of Us', Denmark’s 'Erna at War', Finland’s 'The Blind Man Who Did Not Want To See Titanic', Greece’s 'The Last Note', Hungary’s 'Aurora Borealis', Luxembourg’s 'The Restless', The Netherlands’ 'My Father is an Airplane', Norway’s 'Psychobitch', Poland’s 'Never Gonna Snow Again', Spain’s 'That Was Life', Switzerland’s 'Atlas' and Ukraine’s 'Mother of Apostles' while Romania's 'Wild Romania' and Sweden's 'The Choir' make up the two documentary offerings in the festival programme. 

History aficionados can look forward to Estonia's 'Truth and Justice' and France's 'Lost Illusions' and for a taste of European comedy, tickle your funny bone with Austria’s 'Double Happiness', Czechia’s 'On The Roof', Germany’s 'I’m Your Man', Ireland’s 'Dating Amber', Portugal’s 'Mother Knows Best' and Turkey’s 'A Unique Life'. It doesn't end there, in the true spirit of diversity, no one is left out, Italy's 'Freaks Out; is one for fantasy buffs while Ukraine's 'Hutsulka Ksenya' is an option for lovers of musicals. 

European Film Festival 2022 Featured Country: France

For 2022, France's Lost Illusions (Illusion Perdues) will close the festival on the 26th of May. The film won seven César Awards (2022) - the most prestigious Film Awards in France - including Best Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay; the critically acclaimed movie features an all-star cast and is an adaptation of celebrated French novelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac’s classic novel about a young idealist who learns painful lessons about life. 

Year of Youth 

2022 also sees the European Year of Youth. The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly impacted youths and in an attempt to champion the ideas of youths, the European Film Festival deepens its collaboration with young Singaporean filmmakers by presenting student films from three schools - Laselle College of the Arts, Puttnam School of Film, and Animation, Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Design, and Media, and Ngee Ann Polytechnic's School of Film & Media Studies - alongside the main festival showcase.  

Dates and Festival Tickets

Festival tickets are priced at $13.50 on weekdays and $15 on weekends and are available for sale at https://euff.com.sg/tickets from 19th April.

Concessions are extended to Singapore Film Society members, The Projector Fan Club, The Projector Senior/Student Club, and NSFs.
