Digital Cover: Chanyeol of EXO is a Veteran Rookie
With two earlier singles under his belt, EXO’s CHANYEOL is stepping back into the limelight as a solo artist as he returns with his debut mini-album, Black Out
CHANYEOL is a constant surge of positivity and brightness that lights up any space he is in. Even as a veteran with over a decade of experience in the K-pop industry, CHANYEOL is taking on his latest venture with the mindset of a newcomer, launching his debut solo mini-album Black Out.
One of the leading stars of the third generation “Hallyu Wave”, CHANYEOL is showing no signs of slowing down as he unveiled his six-track mini-album weeks ago. The global star speaks to L’OFFICIEL in an exclusive interview, where he talks about his new beginnings and adventures, accompanied by a stunning set of visuals captured on the streets of Hong Kong.
Congratulations on releasing your solo mini-album, Black Out! Can you share what your album aims to express?
My biggest desire for this album was to showcase great music. I believe the best way to thank all the EXO-Ls waiting is by sharing great music.
Which lyric from the album touches you the most, and why?
On the song “I’m on your side too”, which I wrote thinking of EXO-Ls, there’s a lyric that goes, “The words I was too shy to say often, I want to hold your small hands and share my overflowing emotions with you.” I feel this line perfectly encapsulates my emotions.
What is the most memorable moment when you were preparing your first mini album?
The most memorable moment was when I had the first meeting to discuss the track list for my debut solo album. I felt a wonderful mix of excitement and nerves, as it truly marked the beginning of this journey.
Among the songs on the album, is there a particular one that you’re especially fond of?
The two songs I hold closest to my heart are, “I’m on your side too”, which I mentioned earlier, and “Clover”, which I wrote while thinking of my dog, Zzar. Both tracks bring back many joyful memories from the creative process, deepening my affection for EXO-Ls and Zzar.
How did the other EXO members react to your new album?
When I met SUHO and played him the songs, he noted how much effort and research I had put into them. He expressed his excitement and support, which meant a lot to me. I often engage in musical discussions with SUHO, and our conversations are not only enjoyable but also incredibly inspiring. His expectations motivate me to push myself even harder.
What part of your career are you most passionate about?
The aspects of my career that ignite my passion are songwriting, composing lyrics and playing the guitar. I find great joy in creating my own unique music through these processes. When I play the guitar, all other thoughts fade away and it brings me pure happiness.
We were all impressed with your performance in the series titled The Frog. What genre would you like to explore next in acting?
I would love to explore a genre like romantic comedy that revolves around everyday life.
Recently, have you picked up any new hobbies?
Lately, I’ve been cycling every day. While I’m mostly just exploring nearby areas for now, I love the feeling of the wind as I ride, especially before and after my workouts at the gym.
Beyond acting, performing, and releasing albums, is there something else you’d like to try?
I’m eager to explore various sports, and if the opportunity comes, I would also like to challenge myself by taking on a production role. What’s the best piece of advice that motivates you the most? The phrase “believe in yourself ” is a great motivation for me. I tend to firmly believe in myself and get back on track when I feel lost.
What are you most proud of in your life so far?
The moments I take the most pride in are when goals are achieved together with my EXO members. Whether connecting with fans during our world tours or receiving awards, every shared experience fills me with immense pride.
Now that you’ve released your first solo album and are embarking on a concert tour, what’s next for CHANYEOL?
My next goal is to create even better albums and performances. Since this is my first album and tour, I want to improve on any area I have fallen short on and come back with an even more impressive presentation.
What was the happiest moment for you recently?
The happiest moment I’ve experienced recently was the 2024 CHANYEOL LIVE TOUR: 都市風景 (City-scape) live performance. Standing on stage and connecting with the fans filled me with joy and excitement
