Reinvention in beauty symbolises a brand’s willingness to learn and adapt to the demands of today. For a house with a legacy like Guerlain’s, and the iconic products to match, they have fully embraced the concept wholeheartedly, reimagining their classics to better suit the needs of modern consumers and their lifestyles for comfortable wearability.

This time, the house has reworked its signature Météorites Powder of Pearls under the guidance of Creative Director of Makeup Violette Serrat, who first came across the product as a child. “My connection to Guerlain started with Météorites when I was a kid and I could see Météorites on every woman I knew, so it is a very symbolic product to me,” says Serrat. “What a dream to have been able to work on it!”

First launched in 1987, the powder was initially created to combine all powders in one. And this year, the reworked formulation comprises 95 per cent of naturally-derived ingredients to enhance makeup, correct the complexion, mattify the skin and smooth the skin’s texture.

Serrat’s priority when approaching the reformulation process? Deep diving into Guerlain’s archives and getting into the minds of those who created it. “I took this and worked on it to update it with today’s technology and the desire we have as consumers while keeping the soul of the products,” she shares.

“[The creators] were inspired by the glow of the planet, so it made me think of the aura — something that makes us glow, like being charismatic! From there, I designed all these pearls with different tones to make sure they will work together to bring you just that. It was the most difficult work I have done for Guerlain but also the most incredible.”

Besides its formulation, the Météorites Powder of Pearls also comes with a refreshed scent created in collaboration with perfumer Delphine Jelk. “I wanted the scent to make you feel like yourself, something that reveals your sensuality,” explains Serrat. “I really wanted something more modern without removing the violette scent that people are attached to.”

She continues: “I told Delphine I would love to make the violette scent more sensual and less powdery. She is so talented; she was able to bring to life this feeling I had imagined. It’s so great to join forces with other creatives.” Offering wearers a made-to-measure glow that Serrat believes will “leave a veil that will bring luminosity to the face” while balancing the shine, the product acts as the perfect addition to a Singaporean’s beauty routine. “It’s je ne sais quoi,” she says. “Météorites Pearls can work very well for this type of routine in humid climates as they will balance the shine of the face. It’s not a heavy powder so it will never add a layer that looks cakey to the skin. I use them with a big brush all over my face.”

As for Serrat’s personal beauty routine, the creative seldom looks to trends to influence her process. “For me, the right way to wear makeup is for creative purposes or just to feel good, as a way to express oneself,” she says.

With that said, Guerlain has also come up with two products — Ombres G in Aura Glow and KissKiss Bee Glow in Pop Rose Glow — to complement the Powder of Pearls. And in the months to come, fans and friends of the house can expect to see new additions in the form of the Bee Beauty Secret collection. “To create a beautiful look, [I think of] something really inspiring. For me, I think of spring, the bees and flowers, which is why the Ombres G Majestic Rose is the perfect palette for this,” she says. “It is the very soft tones that fit everyone.”

She adds: “I am always thinking two or three years ahead in terms of development, so right now, I am excited to work with green and try to see how we can make it wearable and inspiring. I am really looking into unusual colours that people are not into and trying to make them super wearable.”
