What You Need To Know About Euphoria Season 2
Ever since Euphoria dropped in summer 2019, there’s been one question on the minds of fans across the globe: when will there be a Season 2? It only took one month for HBO to renew the breakout show, but over a year after its initial airdate, we're still waiting on new episodes.
The series quickly became a fixture of pop culture, influencing the most popular makeup trends of 2019, and subsequently inspiring a viral TikTok trend based on the show's glittery beauty looks. It also launched the careers of budding stars like Hunter Schafer, Barbie Ferreira, Alexa Demie and Angus Cloud, and gave Zendaya, who plays 17-year-old addict Rue, a historical Emmy win. Rue's story was set to continue this year, however, just days before filming began in March 2020, production was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fret not! As production gradually resumes for film and television, more Euphoria will be on its way soon — plus a couple of bonus episodes. While we wait, L’Officiel rounds up everything you need to know about Season 2 to tide you over until Rue and friends return to the small screen.
Season 2 will resume filming in early 2021
Originally set to air in 2020, the production of Season 2 ground to a halt with the coronavirus outbreak. In an interview, Zendaya revealed that the crew was supposed to return to work in March, but "literally three or four days before that, they were shut down."
Although filming won’t resume until early 2021, everything else is ready to go — before production was forced to shut down, scripts were written, makeup was tested and sets were built. So the crew just has to pick up where they left off to bring back the magic of Euphoria.
Two special episodes will premiere this December
On December 6, you can get your Euphoria fix before the return of Season 2, when the first of two special episodes drops. The title of the first instalment, "Trouble Don't Last Always", has already been revealed, and the second title willl likely be announced with its release date. Appropriate for its holiday season premiere, "Trouble Don't Last Always" will follow Rue as she celebrates Christmas after the cliffhanger finale of Season 1.
While standalone episodes, these specials will still fit into the fabric of the Euphoria universe, helping fans to get a better look at their favourite characters.
Season 2 will feature faces both old and new
Season 1 featured a large ensemble cast, each with their own individual stories. We will see the return of these beloved characters in the second season, and learn even more about the ways their lives intertwine, overlap and diverge.
There will be a few fresh faces as well. Earlier this year, a casting call for Season 2 went out, revealing at least four new additions to the Euphoria team: 17-year-old Darian, who is sensitive, vulnerable and mischievous; Ray, who has a "pure heart" and is "attractive with an edge"; Ami, a teenage drug addict and stripper; and Serena, a "sassy and tough" woman in her 50s.
Gia could be playing a bigger role
In Season 1, we saw Storm Reid take on the role of Rue's younger sister, Gia. Reid revealed last year that she's been working closely with the show's writers to bring Gia's character to fuller realisation. The 16-year-old actress is looking forward to filming Season 2, and is excited at the prospect of Gia having her own exploratory episode.
The show's rising stars want to see their characters challenged
Both Hunter Schafer and Barbie Ferreira, who play Jules and Kat, respectively, have said they are excited to explore their characters more in the upcoming season, with Ferreira revealing, "I think I just really wanna see Kat come into herself more and explore her dynamics with her friends... like, where is her place with her friends, how does she bring her confidence into her everyday life and school life?"
