We're Totally Buggin' Because A 'Clueless' Reboot Is On The Way

Focusing on Cher's lifelong number two, the series will follow Dionne as she deals with the pressures of popularity while figuring out what happened to her best friend

There are a lot of teen movies out there that haven’t aged well, but Clueless isn’t one of them — the ’90s cult classic has only tightened its grip on pop culture in the quarter century since its debut. Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, the film combined humour, satire, and romance in one glossy teen comedy, and gifted us with plenty of on-trend fashion (athleisure, power skirt suiting, tiny handbags, knee-high socks), slang words (as if!), and acting talents (Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, and the late Brittany Murphy).

Having celebrated its 25th anniversary just last month, Clueless is coming back to our screens with an all-new reboot. This time around, the spotlight will fall on Cher’s best friend, Dionne Davenport, who was played by Stacey Dash in the movie.

“A baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fuelled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong number two Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans,” the show description reads. “How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unravelling the mystery of what happened to her best friend?”

We’re not quite sure what to expect from that — we’re thinking Mean Girls meets Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars — but you can count us in anyway. The as-yet-untitled series follows a TV spin-off that ran from 1996 to 1999, as well as last year’s titular Off Broadway musical.

Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey of Will & Grace fame will serve as writers and executive producers for the reboot, along with Robert Lawrence (the producer of the original film), Corinne Brinkerhoff, and Scott Rudin. No cast members or release date has been announced at present, but you can expect it to premiere on Peacock, NBC’s answer to Netflix.
