Exclusive Interview With Brooklyn Beckham: On Photography And Denim
Brooklyn Beckham is not only the eldest son of power couple David and Victoria Beckham , but the 22-year-old is also making his own name as a photographer, in addition to his career as a model. Add to that a disarming boy-next-door style, and you have a brand ambassador that most brands can only dream of.
Beckham has made his debut as a campaign face for iconic denim brand Pepe Jeans. It is no coincidence that the collaboration has been announced together with the World Water Day, as Pepe Jeans wants to demonstrate the importance of water for the production of clothing (and vice versa). Denim has a reputation for having a damaging impact on the environment, with production processes involving a lot of water. With the "Wiser Wash" technique, Pepe Jeans now introduces a revolutionary washing technology that drastically reduces the use of water in the production of denim. Denim that's kind to the environment and doesn't even look bad. L'Officiel was given the opportunity to ask a few questions to this ambitious it boy. Check out the exclusive interview and a sneak peek behind the scenes of the campaign below.
You are a photographer yourself, what do you like best about that?
I like the challenge of trying to capture a moment, an expression, the way the light falls on the subject I'm photographing. Or sometimes it could be something or someone in nature that produces a natural and spontaneous image.
How would you describe your photography style?
I mainly try to be spontaneous and to capture what is in front of me.
Analog or digital? Why?
Analog. The depth and the colours, even if it's in black and white -- the photos still turn out incredible.
Can you describe the creative process behind this campaign?
Together with the Pepe Jeans team, we tried to draw attention to the precious good that is water. Isn't it the most precious element we have, along with the air we breathe? At the same time, we wanted to show the progress they have made in figuring out how to use very little water and almost half the energy to produce denim.
What is a 'Wiser Future' for you?
A smarter future is one in which we are all more aware of the things we can do on a daily basis to avoid wasting our most precious elements, which unfortunately we all take for granted.
Why did you decide to partner with Pepe Jeans London?
I really like the Pepe Jeans vibe, plus it's a UK company! The project was really a fit for me because they took the time to show me what the Wiser Wash concept is and to explain exactly what and how they worked.
What are your favorite Wiser Wash pieces?
The classic jeans and denim jacket.
What is your favorite way to style denim?
As simple as possible! A white t-shirt and a sneaker.
What is your favorite place when you think about water?
Right now: the Pacific.
How do you save water in your daily life?
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Measure the water for your tea before heating it. Also turn off the tap if you are soaping in the shower. Don't let water run!
