When it comes to luxury bespoke fragrances, French perfumery house Maison 21G is at the forefront of the movement. Founded by Johanna Monange, the maison has since expanded its horizons and delved into the art of home scents with its own collection of personalised luxury reed diffusers, candles, and oil burners

“As someone who has forged a lifelong career in the perfumery industry, I’ve long been fascinated by the scent of home and ways to inject the luxurious and scent style into the familiar when it comes to home fragrances,” says Monange. And true enough, the founder only had good things to say about other brands she respects — Diptyque Paris and Jo Malone, to name a few — when speaking to us about her personal experiences with home fragrances.

As for Maison 21G itself, Monange seems to have taken it one step further by offering the option of personalisation to her own range. She elaborates, “As our sense of home changes and evolves through these difficult times, our approach to how we curate the atmosphere in which we live must also adapt.” In short, everyone’s preferences are different. Your home range should cater to what you like and suit your various moods, versus it being the other way around.

What's Trending

When it comes to what’s trending, Monange says it’s all up to the individual. But of course, there are still particular scents that do well among the general mass public. “Home scents are more dependant on your needs,” says the fragrance aficionado. “If you love ambience, go for Sandalwood and Vanilla. If you want something more refreshing, go for Bergamot and Pomegranate. If you want something more elegant, Rose.” There’s something for every taste.

After her recent trip to Europe, Monange also notes that home fragrances have become more universal across the world. “There’s no one bestseller anymore as people have many moods,” she continues, “which is why it's important to develop a good range of scents.” She even tells us that she sees less of a gap between what's trending in Europe and Asia nowadays: “I see what’s popular here and there, and it’s the same.”

On top of that, Monange also shares that home scents are genderless. “As compared to perfume, I think it’s even more genderless. It’s up to preference and what pleases you. I think we’re in the trend of genderless.”

Following the success of their luxury fragrances, the maison has since come up with a range of home scents consisting of a reed diffuser, an oil burner, and candles — all manufactured to work best with specifically formulated oils by Maison 21G. Free from phthalates, GMO and CMR ingredients, preservatives, and other chemicals most commonly found in mainstream home scents, this luxury range is sure to liberate your senses in the comfort of your home.

Below, Monange shares her advice to get the best out of each form of home scent.

Bespoke Reed Diffuser

Monange: “Mix according to your mood. Reed is very subtle. You’ll need to use oil with lighter molecular weight like fruity, green notes. If you put Vanilla or Sandalwood in your diffuser, it’s too airy and won’t evaporate by itself. For the reed diffuser, I personally like mixing Fig with Bergamot.”

Maison 21G Recommends: “We love the pairings of Fig and Patchouli, Pear and Muguet, and Bergamot and Vetiver — perfect for elevating your home scent and enveloping your space in a sense of comfort, relaxation, and bliss.”

Luciole Oil Burner

Monange: “This is nice for your living room or next to your bed. I love to sleep with this on. The oil you burn should be able to be burned, which is why I developed a specific oil for this reason. It’s different from the oil you put into your reed diffuser which just evaporates, so it’s a bit technical. For the oil burner, I love to put Havana incense as it’s a bit spicy. Jasmine and Rose will be nice also.”

Maison 21G Recommends: “Our favourite scents to burn on our stylish Luciole oil burner are Havana, Incense, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, and Cedar. All of these natural essences fill the home with the most wonderful, exotic, and calming fragrances, perfect for elevating the mood and relaxing the mind.”

Bespoke Half Moon Dual Candle

“This is perfect to put on your desk. For candles, I like Sandalwood, Amber, and Vanilla. Woody notes will also work pretty well,” shares Monange. She also emphasises the importance of asking what’s in your candle before purchasing it. “When you buy your product, you need to be mindful of your health and the planet.”

Maison 21G Recommends: “Choose candles made exclusively from natural wax. Our Maison’s candles only use natural soy wax and a little coconut wax, but beeswax is a beautiful alternative with its own distinctive aroma.”
