Social media has a trending recipe, and it's incredibly easy to make.  Dalgona coffee has been going viral for several weeks on social media, making its rounds across Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Better known with the hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge, it's the perfect challenge to occupy yourself with as you stay at home.

The trend has come in the wake of quarantine and lockdowns all over the world, emerging as just one of the most bizarre and seemingly banal 'challenges' across social media, where users post their version of the challenge using its specific hashtag. But did you know that there is also a bit of culture and history attached to the dalgona coffee challenge?

This drink is based on an Indian drink known as Phenti Hui coffee (or beaten coffee). The difference is that when making Phenti Hui, the milk is poured over the whipped coffee mixture instead of spooning the coffee mixture over the milk. This coffee has been around for a long time and was especially popular in South Korea in the 1970s and 80s. The coffee only recently became a worldwide hit when a South Korean actor, Jung Il-woo, visited a food stall in Macau in January this year, where he got a similar whipped coffee drink that reminded him of a 'dalgona,' Korean honeycomb toffee. Moments later, the drink was presented during a South Korean TV show, Stars' Top Recipe in Fun-Staurant, where it caught the attention of the general public. And so, the dalgona coffee was born.

In South Korea, foodies, vloggers and bloggers started posting videos of their homemade version under the hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge. While most dalgona coffees don't actually contain dalgona, a type of honeycomb toffee, the creamy texture is reminiscent of a sweet treat. The good news? The Dalgona is very simple to make yourself. Here is a dose of inspiration, with a dalgona coffee recipe and a video to follow  you through all the steps in preparing your very own Dalgona coffee.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of instant coffee
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • Milk (regular milk or vegetable milk)

Preparation

Put the instant coffee, sugar and water in a bowl and mix well until the mixture becomes fluffy - this may take several minutes! Mix it in preferably with a hand mixer but a whisk works just as well. Once you reach your perfect fluffy consistency, fill  a glass or mug with two thirds of cold milk. Add the fluffy coffee mixture on top of the cold milk.  Add in a few ice cubes and stir it all in. Enjoy!
