Stay centered and balanced during these uncertain times.

No doubt about it – it is an anxious time that we live in. With the rise in coronavirus cases locally, Singapore has implemented social distancing measures to stop the virus from spreading within the country.  A significant number of events has been postponed or cancelled, and those still in place kept under stringent measures.

This period has encouraged more people to stay in, while many offices are implementing a work from home scheme. If you are made to stay at home, take this as a chance to recuperate and slow down. It’s time to get on that household chore you’ve been putting off, try out a new hobby, or simply appreciate that extra R&R time: sometimes there can be no greater pleasure than putting on your favourite sheet mask, while watching a guilty pleasure TV show.

We could all use the time for some extra pampering and relaxation, and self care in the face of the disruptions brought about by the coronavirus. Here are the ways you can do so:

Listen to a Meditation app

In uncertain times like these, now is a good time to pay attention to your mental health. Insight Timer and Headspace are both pretty good options for those looking to kickstart meditation during this period. Both apps have a collection of meditation, sleep and movement exercises for you to help you pass the time while managing your stress levels. Currently, Headspace is providing a collection, called Weathering The Storm, in response to COVID-19 and completely free during this period.

Insight Timer comes completely free of charge, while Headspace comes with a 7 day free trial.

Check out a podcast

From Ted Talks Daily to The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast, there are a plethora of podcasts from different categories to learn and be entertained from. It’s a great way to expand your general knowledge and learn something new, and you can play them while going over a daily chore or accompany you during solo mealtimes.

Do as the stoics do

Stoicism is an ancient tool for remaining calm in adversity. “Circumstances don’t make the man, they only reveal him to himself,” so goes the famous qoute by stoic philosopher Epictetus. The stoics strive for tranquillity in trying moments, which may just be the compass for times like these. Check out resources such as the Daily Stoic or read How To Be A Stoic : Ancient Wisdom for Modern Living to get inspired by.
