Dior Rose des Vents Novelties Go Bold With Colour

The latest additions to the Rose des Vents collection represent a new phase of its evolution, says Dior Joaillerie’s artistic director, Victoire de Castellane.

It’s a new leg of the Rose des Vents journey: The fine jewellery collection that Artistic Director of Dior Joaillerie Victoire de Castellane launched in 2015 introduces fresh pieces — a continual rejuvenation of the collection imbued with references to happenstance and adventure, and distinguished by reversible medallions bearing compass roses, diamonds, and hardstones in Monsieur Dior’s favourite colours.

Novelties making their entrance next month are the Rose des Vents earrings, bracelet and necklace each featuring a vibrant mix of different hardstones, including malachite, turquoise, lapis lazuli and pink opal. These follow closely behind the April debut of three new Rose Céleste jewels, featuring the moon and laughing sun motifs, and medallions in graduated sizes; Y-shaped necklaces, a delicate composition in rose gold or yellow gold with a single medallion suspended from a diamond; and contemporary open bangles, in yellow gold and white mother-of-pearl, or pink gold and onyx or pink opal, with the compass rose set across from a diamond held in place by beaded gold. These, along with open rings and closed rings, are perfect when worn stacked or paired with different styles of Rose des Vents jewels, de Castellane recommends.

“I added ultra-thin open bracelets in different colours of gold and stones that can be worn alone or in an accumulation: Necklaces with a pendant medallion that dresses the neckline, a more symmetrical long necklace playing with medallions of different sizes on the sides, longer earrings in the spirit of girandoles, and hoops like constellations,” she elaborates. “[These are like] happiness that completes the collection.”

Though it is now in its seventh year, the Rose des Vents collection shows no sign of slowing down, and it is constantly reinvigorated with fresh designs and variations. Asked how she continually finds inspiration for successive novelties, de Castellane says: “Each of my collections leads to the next one; I like the idea of going even further, of going where I’m least expected.”

“I like that the collections develop like families, with new births [all the time].”

Rose des Vents holds a particularly sentimental position among Dior Joaillerie’s collections. It traces its origin all the way back to Monsieur Dior, who grew up in a villa in Normandy that had for its emblem and name “Rhumbs”, a nautical term referring to any of the 32 points of the compass. And in 1946, on chancing upon a metal star on the ground, Monsieur Dior took that as a sign of luck and an omen to establish his couture house.

“The [Rose des Vents] collection reinterprets Monsieur Dior’s lucky star, one of the house’s flagship themes, in the form of a compass rose, an eight-pointed star. It is designed as an odyssey on the four winds from all walks of life,” de Castellane says. “It represents the journey of creation and pays tribute to Christian Dior, who was one of the first designers to travel the world.”

“The compass rose guides the journey of creation.”
