Up Close with the Loro Piana Spring/Summer 2024 Collection in Hong Kong

More than quiet luxury; a vibrant and harmonious wardrobe, rooted in Japanese simplicity.

Earlier this week, L’OFFICIEL SINGAPORE attended the Loro Piana Spring/Summer 2024 collection presentation in Hong Kong. Held at the Liang Yi Museum on historic Hollywood Road, the private exhibition space was restyled with the traditional architectural aesthetics of a Japanese living room and garden. It’s a serene atmosphere, perfect for discovering the new season’s wardrobe of intense simplicity together with friends of the brand Charlene Choi, Ashley Lin, Elva Ni, Kevin Chu and Jason Wu.

Before we delve into the collection, a word on “quiet luxury”. The rise of understated style in 2023 has led many so-called publications and social media pundits to use and abuse the term, to the point where it has completely lost its meaning (all hail the algorithm!). They conflate any and every minimalist aesthetic with it, even milquetoast ones. Worst are those who suggest that quiet luxury can be achieved on a budget — oxymoron at the highest levels.

Often featured on such lists, it’s no wonder Loro Piana wants to distance itself from the trend. Yes, the brand is known for its excellent craftsmanship and timeless, unadorned style. And yes, its elegant wardrobe is shaped from sublime fabrics. But it has so much more to say than just that. Case in point: Spring/Summer 2024’s rich dialogue with the Land of the Rising Sun.

The entire collection is a study on the harmonious and vibrant simplicity of Japanese dressing. Reversible quilted silk coats, collarless woven jackets and kimono-style blazers all speak to the oriental theme. The iconic Spagna jacket is rendered in a women’s cut for the first time, in regular and cropped silhouettes. Jacquard silk skirts and blouses are as delicate as the cherry blossoms they depict. Summery linens and rustic, unstructured knitwear provide ample room between the body and clothing (what the Japanese call ma).

Natural notes of Sencha Green, Bamboo, Ginger Root and Wild Sage colour the collection, before blooming into shades of indigo in the brand new Denim Silk. The innovative fabric is similar to CashDenim, but replaces cashmere with silk in the weft.

Accessories see the launch of Loom, Loro Piana’s first double handed tote, in buttery soft leathers as well as canvas with leather detailing. The rounded crossbody Gheira comes in new sizes, while the classy Extra Bag features a wider array of leathers and colours. Signature detailing on the Gheira and Extra Bag also inspires an inaugural collection of bracelets and necklaces in metal and leather, unfussy jewellery that add a subtle touch to any outfit.

Ultimately, the Loro Piana Spring/Summer 2024 collection is a conversation about the philosophical ideals of Japanese aesthetics: non-ostentatious, humble and simple, but never quiet. Check out some of our favourite looks below:
