The New Wave: Celine Spring 2020

In the shadow of the dome of Les Invalides, the fifth chapter of the Slimane story for Celine unfolded in a celebration of the bourgeoisie of yesteryear

After a controversial start in what for years had been the inviolable sanctuary of Phoebe Philo, Hedi Slimane continues to refine his aesthetic language for Celine, outlining in an ever more marked way the new course for the maison, and posing as the standard-bearer of that particular bourgeois style which flowered in Paris in the '70s.

With a cinematic visual rendering, the heroines of Truffaut and Godard films are brought back to life on the catwalk, together with Loulou de la Falaise, the icon of those years and inexhaustible source of inspiration even today. Boot-cut jeans with an irresistible '70s allure are paired with impeccably fit blazers, of which Slimane has always been a master. Lavalliere shirts matched with culottes, and midi dresses in archival prints follow along the same stylistic paths forged by last season's show. Slimane purifies bourgeois fashion from its snobbish connotations for a collection that isn't revolutionary, but is definitely desirable.
