Schiaparelli's Extraterrestrial Ode in Haute Couture for Spring/Summer 2024
Daniel Roseberry pays homage to Elsa Schiaparelli's uncle and their shared fascination with planetary wonders and otherworldly beings.
In a sartorial departure from the mundane, Daniel Roseberry beckons fashion enthusiasts to shift their gaze beyond the terrestrial realm. The Spring/Summer 2024 women's haute couture show unfolds as a mesmerizing narrative, drawing inspiration from the celestial legacy of Elsa Schiaparelli's uncle, Giovanni Schiaparelli. As the director of the Brera Observatory in Milan, Giovanni discovered Mars' expansive landscapes, akin to the Grand Canyon, and coined the term "Martian," conceiving extraterrestrial creatures that continue to captivate humanity.
Elsa, enamored by the cosmos, delved into the realms of space and astrology. Roseberry's latest collection, a paean to this celestial obsession, serves as an exploration of contradictions—melding heritage with avant-garde, pure beauty with provocation, and reconciling the earthly with the celestial. "As art and nature teach us, seemingly opposing elements can converge to birth astonishing chimeras," asserts creative director Daniel Roseberry.
This conceptualization materializes in the "Schiaparalien" collection, a haute couture tableau for spring-summer 2024. The garments juxtapose traditional craftsmanship, such as guipure lace, velvet, and fringes, with ultramodern references infused with microchips, calculators, and electronic devices. "These garments bridge personal and regional references, from Texas iconography to abstract nods to my home state," Roseberry explains. Sequin-adorned bandanas, thigh-high cowboy boots festooned with buckles, and silk satin tips emulating dressage horse braids on a suede bomber jacket and a white denim corset dress exemplify this synthesis.
Daniel Roseberry reaffirms his distinctive approach, seamlessly intertwining personal iconography with the Maison's heritage. The haute couture on display is a parallel universe, evoking a fascination so profound that it feels extraterrestrial—an ode to the uniqueness that haute couture brings, as if descended from another planet.
