“Why have there been no great women artists?” was the question posed by the opening look at Dior’s  Spring/Summer 2018 runway show. The look was modelled by Sasha Pivovarova — aptly so, considering that the Russian model doubles as an artist herself, painting and drawing in her free time.

There’s little wonder, then, why Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has picked Pivovarova to be the face of the Maison’s latest ad campaign. Through a series of photographs, lensed by Patrick Demarchelier, the model appears in her element: paintbrush in hand, poised upon her portraits of women with angular faces and hypnotic gazes that mirror her own.

One could say that the campaign is a reimagining of what Niki de Saint Phalle looked like in her own studio, in the midst of dreaming up new paintings and sculptures bearing her signature vibrant style. After all, the late model-turned artist was Maria Grazia Chiuri's primary inspiration for this collection. If anything, Dior’s new campaign certainly affirms the brand’s continued celebration of femininity and feminism, in all of its facets.
