A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Penélope Cruz's Oscar Prep with Chanel
Take a look at Penélope Cruz's preparation for the Oscars with luxury fashion House Chanel.
At this year's Oscars, Spanish actress Penélope Cruz wore a Chanel royal silhouette tailored for her. The actress was first intrigued by the beauty of Chanel back in 1999 when she was invited to watch the House's fashion show in Paris.
The friendship between the actress and Chanel continues to this day, and Chanel has since dressed Penélope for important film events: the Cannes, Venice and San Sebastian Film Festivals, the Oscars and the Caesar Awards.
Last year, Penélope became the face of Chanel for its Spring/Summer Haute Couture collections along with actresses Marion Cotillard, Lily-Rose Depp, singer Vanessa Paradis and public figure Charlotte Casiraghi.
"I like Chanel's attention to detail and her artistic approach to work. I would say I have been very lucky to have been collaborating for so many years. I have visited the Chanel sewing studio more than once, so I made friends with tailors and craftsmen, some of whom have been working here for more than 40 years," says Penélope.
"Every time I see this work up close, I feel even more respectful of Chanel's fashion world and craftsmanship. For many years, I was fascinated by the work of Karl Lagerfeld, and now the work of designer Virginie Viard, who, by the way, has been creating here for three decades."
At the 94th Oscar ceremony, Penélope dressed in a tailor-made black taffeta dress inspired by one of the models presented in 2020/21 in the Autumn/Winter Haute Couture collection. It took more than 680 hours of work to sew the dress and it was embroidered with 8 thousand shiny flakes and beads.
The ornate neckline, a ribbon embroidered with glossy flakes, mimics the tweed fabric of the main 2022 Chanel – an element of the Autumn collection. The ribbon, which became a glowing detail of the evening dress, was embroidered by hand. Penélope complemented the festive image with a Chanel high-end jewellery ring and 18-carat white gold and diamond earrings, Vol Suspendu, as well as a gold and diamond ring, Diamant Essentiel.
