Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2022 Collection Explores the Mystery of the Night
Inspired by his upcoming collaboration with HBO’s ‘Irma Vep’, Nicolas Ghesquière unveils his ceremonially vampiric-esque collection at the Lourve Museum in Paris.
Set in a grand hallway of the Louvre at dusk, made ambient by grand chandeliers, roman pillars, and heavy, sinister music curated in minor keys, Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection plays with time to bring couture inspired by the 20th century to modern fashion aficionados.
Artistic Director Nicolas Ghesquière calls this aesthetic an “invitation to le grand bal of Time,” emphasizing the use of embellishments, incrustations, and archaic embroidery techniques as an adaptation of the past.
The designer references his collaboration with HBO Limited Series ‘Irma Vep’ — a modern reinvention of the silent film series “Les Vampires” by Louis Feuillade in 1915 — as inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2022 collection. “I like the figure of a vampire who travels through the ages, adapting to dress codes of the era he lives in while maintaining a certain air of the past,” explains Ghesquière.
The vampiric nature of the collection coupled with the eeriness of the choice of background music only created a sense of uneasiness when watching the show — a part of Ghesquière’s initial vision that came true during the show. He wanted to show the “ceremonial aspect, the intrigue, the sidelong glances, the whispering, the sensual infatuation,” along with the “desire and protocol, and the tension that (arise) from those opposing forces” that came from such folklore in his collection.
As such, the ensembles saw a parade of Ellipse dresses, structured skirts reminiscent of olden-day tailcoats, capes, and ceremonial collars to fully encapsulate the aesthetic.
