Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2021 Collection Tells The Story Of A Journey Inwards
The Cruise season is typically characterised by breezy holiday wear tailored for the glamorous jet-set lifestyle, presented via spectacular shows staged in far-flung locations. But for Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2021 collection, in light of the ongoing global crisis and consequent restrictions, Nicolas Ghesquière decided to take viewers on a voyage of a different kind — a departure inwards, and a personal journey through his past, present, and possibilities for the future.
“I looked somewhere that has been calling out to me for a long time, somewhere I hadn’t taken the time to go back to,” says the artistic director. “To uncover one inspiration after another. This is an exploration of my creative identity.
The result is Game On, a whimsical adventure in escapism, where Monogram flowers mingle with playing card motifs and graphic stripes in every scale on creations perhaps best described as homewear gone high fashion.
Romantic ’80s blousons and frothy rococo collars go hand in hand with cargo pants and cuffed loose trousers, while sharp-shouldered jackets are juxtaposed with leggings and belted chemisiers with fluid maxi dresses. Footwear runs the gamut from pointy-toed pumps to lace-up boots to the Maison’s iconic Archlight sneakers, while classic leather goods silhouettes such as the Speedy, Twist, Petite Malle, and Vanity are reimagined with boldly-hued diamond, heart, spade and club accents.
Underscoring the everyday vibe of the collection, the lookbook was shot in Ghesquière’s studio at the Maison’s headquarters in Paris, in which models are seen posing alongside office supplies and general work paraphernalia, including a photocopier, a chair, a dustbin, and a ladder. At a time when most of us continue to work from home and even the office has become an exotic destination, Louis Vuitton’s latest proposal feels like a heartwarming glimpse into a post-pandemic future.
