Louis Vuitton Cruise 2023: A Place in the Sun
With bold and sculpted silhouettes, and high-shine jacquards, embellishments and draped fabrics, Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2023 collection is fit for a true warrior princess
One evening in mid-May, celebrities like Gemma Chan, Maude Apatow, Chloë Grace Moretz, Deepika Padukone, and Doona Bae gathered in San Diego — all for Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2023 runway show at the Brutalist concrete structures of The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, which were designed by architect Louis Kahn in the 1960s. Even with the impressive turnout of A-listers here, Nicolas Ghesquière himself said, “The guest of honour for the show is the sun.”
And Ghesquière certainly made sure his Cruise 2023 pieces shone in tandem with the glorious La Jolla sunset — the collection’s bold and sculpted silhouettes immediately suggested that the models were playing futuristic desert warriors and otherworldly princesses.
The looks featured shiny jacquards and generous drapes of metallic fabrics, as well as embellishments including XL-sized palettes for maximum reflective effect. Ghesquière injected a casual touch with functional shoulder bags and sneakers, as well as sportswear details and streetwear accessories including skateboards (yes!).
What shimmered the most in our eyes? The three closing looks — with sculptural jackets that each appeared to be a cross between a spaceship and a spinning top, replete with protruding metallic shoulders and billowing sleeves of tinsel.
