A Mystical Beginning at Lanvin FW19

The highly anticipated first collection by Bruno Sialelli, Lanvin's new creative director, featured an array of styles, masterfully pieced together.

New year, new you. That was certainly case for the world's oldest fashion house, Lanvin. Four years after the departure of Alber Elbaz, the Maison has seen a succession of creative directors: Olivier Lapidus, Bouchra Jarrar and now, Bruno Sialelli takes the reins of the house founded by Jeanne Lanvin at the end of the 20th century.

It was this rich heritage that the 31-year-old French designer took inspiration from for his first collection for Lanvin this Fall/Winter 2019 season. The silhouette was androgynous and the lines were fluid, highlighted by the play on transparency and signature silks. Styles were intermixed, from Gothic and classical to pastels and sepia. In fact, Sialelli proved himself a master of layering, something he sharpened over the last two years at Jonathan Anderson's side at Loewe. From top to bottom, every layer in each look was coherent: tartan apron on body lurex, mosaic bathrobe under shearling coat. And let's not forget the accessories: a fishing hat, flat totes, asymmetric bucket bags, fringed tennis shoes, studded clogs and a lot more.

Sialelli's first offerings are certainly a good omen for Lanvin, which was bought in February 2018 by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun International.
