The Savoir-Faire Behind Björk's Custom Gucci Gown for 'Ovule'
In accordance with Björk's new album Fossora, Creative Director Alessandro Michele has designed two custom Gucci gowns exclusively for the singer. Here, we take you through the making of one of them.
Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk has made a name for herself as the mother of otherworldly music compositions and artistically-produced music videos; and we expected nothing else for her new album – titled Fossora, set to be released at the end of the month.
To help her achieve her creative vision for her latest work of art, the creative enlisted the help of Gucci's Creative Director Alessandro Michele to design two custom gowns just for the album. The partnership follows the duo's collaboration back in 2017 for Björk's 'The Gate'.
The singer has just debuted the music video for her single 'Ovule', featuring one of Michele's extravagant creations: A red latex body suit decorated with spirals of pleated organza and cascading sequin fringe, and embellished with crystalline trims rhythmically swirling up top and down low.
To commemorate the continual partnership between Björk and Michele, Gucci has produced a short film depicting the savoir-faire behind the 'Ovule' gown. Directed by Tommaso Arnaldi, the film unveils the sartorial process of the dress' design, highlighting the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into creating such an intricate piece.
The artisans behind the gown are shown hand embroidering the sequin fringes and crystalline edgings to the gown. Small details like the sewing and shaping of the spirals along the shoulder area can also be observed in the film. The final shot moves away from the detailing to reveal the completed gown towards the end, showcasing the dynamic and dramatic blood-red number, finished with a flower-like train.
