Givenchy's New 'Whip' Handbag is SS19's Toughest Accessory
Shortly after joining the Maison, Clare Waight Keller shared her belief that "Givenchy stands for a powerful woman". Indeed, we've seen that reflected in her designs and most recently at Givenchy's Spring 2019 show, where female models strode down the runway in leather jackets, army pants and tuxedo jackets — pieces borrowed from the boys but, thanks to Keller's couture training, were rendered formidably elegant for the Givenchy woman. And her weapon of choice this season? The Whip handbag, a boxy offering with sharply-cut edges that models wielded like a shield on the runway.
Available in three sizes (small, medium and large), the Whip commands attention with its bold silhouette and a cutout handle lined with woven leather strips alluding to the bag's inspiration: the art of whip-making. Elsewhere on the bag, you'll find other details associated with traditional whips, namely leather braiding and knots that have been perfected by the Maison's craftsmanship.
The Whip can be carried as a handbag or across the body with a strap, but for off-duty days you can even go hands-free and opt for the belt bag version. Both the Whip handbag and belt bag come in an array of soft colours that balance out the bag's toughness, such as pistachio, yellow, taupe and Pantone's 2019 Colour of the Year, coral.
On top of these, the Whip handbag is also available in three types of aquatic snakeskin: Karung with a bright yellow handle and strap, graphic Elaphe with a black handle and strap, and a show-stealing emerald green Ayers with a royal blue handle and strap.
