What is 'Genderful' Fashion?
L’OFFICIEL explores the inclusive term taking over the fashion world.
Amidst the pandemic, younger generations have started to rewrite the fashion rulebook—the first rule being that all rules were made to be broken.
As fashion has developed into a space of limitless expression, the restrictions of stereotypical gendered fashion that once existed have been dissolved. Filling its space? ‘Genderful’ fashion.
A term meant to bring liberation to the fashion realm, ‘genderful’ has begun to replace terms like ‘genderless’ and ‘gender-neutral’ in light of intentionally creating a fashion environment for all body types, sizes, and genders.
Comprised of garments that can be worn by any and all bodies, regardless of gender, ‘genderful’ fashion aims to bring positivity to boundless inclusivity. While terms like ‘genderless’ have a negative connotation, the use of the word ‘genderful’ supports the constant flow of one's identity and self-expression through fashion.
While artists like Harry Styles, Billy Porter, and Troye Sivan have all powerfully challenged gender barriers in the name of 'genderful' fashion, designers such as Joseph Altuzarra have begun to intentionally develop collections for all identities.
“Genderful is a very positive word. It acknowledges a kind of plurality of identity, and I think it feels playful,” Altuzarra said.
Recently launching genderful line ALTU, Atuzarra combines elements of traditional femininity and masculinity to create garments for anyone and everyone–without limitation.
