Ferragamo's Spring/Summer 2023 Show Takes On Elements of New Hollywood
Out with the old and in with the new, Hollywood glamour gets an upgrade with Ferragamo's Spring/Summer 2023 collection.
What better way to celebrate a brand new chapter for Ferragamo than with a fresh take on Hollywood glamour? Led by Creative Director Maximilian Davis, the house pays homage to Salvatore’s origins in fashion. "I wanted to pay tribute to Salvatore’s start by bringing in the culture of Hollywood – but new Hollywood," says Davis in an official statement. "Its ease and sensuality; its sunset and sunrise."
As such, the collection was inspired by previous works found in the archives, to revitalise the DNA of the brand through brand new eyes. "It was about looking into the archive and establishing what could be redefined to become relevant for today," explains the Creative Director.
The result? A hearty blend of Davis' daring contemporary vision with Ferragamo's house codes with the incorporation of leathers, skin-tight ensembles, translucent knitwear, hand-dyed fabric, layers of silk and organza, coupled with suede footwear reminiscent of the Renaissance, as well as refined accessories.
Davis also drew inspiration from the sparkling red shoes Ferragamo designed for Marilyn Monroe back in 1959 by elevating SS23's collection with crystals – an obvious visual reference to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood that we're already familiar with.
Though menswear was kept simple, Davis also infused an '80s element into the selection. He introduced fabrics that are often used for womenswear – "perfectly-proportioned, louche refinement" – into his techniques for menswear, opting to remove visual elements of the tuxedo we're so used to seeing to allow wearers to experience a new perspective on the traditional formal wear.
