Fendi's Celestial Couture Spring 2022 Collection Reflects the Spirituality of Rome

Kim Jones draws upon the spiritual-like ancestry of Rome for his third couture collection.

The current pandemic and months of on and off lockdown have everyone yearning for the same thing: A great escape. This collective sentiment has been felt throughout as themes such as space and the heavens have completed this season’s couture shows. Not only do these themes reflect our common desire to escape reality, but are also inspired by current events such as an ongoing space race pitting billionaire against billionaire or even the surge in astrology obsession in our pop culture.

Kim Jones tapped into this spiritual-like ancestry for his third Fendi couture collection as he once again communicates his fascination with Rome. Using a video of moving clouds to enliven the runway, Jones truly gave the models a celestial like power, describing them as “an army of empresses” descending from the heavens as they stepped onto the futuristic runway.

Through his many couture pieces, Jones sought to honour the historic codes and constructs of the Eternal City using fluid fabrics including duchesse silk and organza juxtaposed to mink, pearls and sequin embroidered leathers. Not only do such textures recall opulent fabrics but they represent the harmony between what once was and what is now.

The choice of colour also serves to reinforce Jones’ vision for this Spring 2022 Couture collection. The widespread use of blue across Jones’ pieces demonstrates motions of perseverance, vigilance, justice and in a religious context, a respect for God. The touches of red suggest valour and courage while also referring to the power that Rome once held. Finally, the purple is an undoubted ode to the Vatican. The strategic symbolism of colour added to the structure of the gowns with floor-sweeping trains is Jones’ way of celebrating the power of women.
