Dior Closes its First Fall 2022 Show in Seoul
On April 30, Dior held the Fall 2022 fashion show at Ewha Womans University. This unique show, the first to be held in Korea, shows the fashion House's vision and desire to penetrate deeper into the Korean and Asian markets in general.
Launching the collection in Korea for the first time, Dior initiated "a dialogue between the brand's history and the contemporary world". The performance gathered A-list Korean stars on the first row, typically global ambassadors, Jisoo and Sehun, as well as Dior ambassadors – Suzy, Nam Joo-hyuk and Yuna Kim. Before that, Jisoo, Suzy and Yuna Kim also appeared in promotional videos released by Dior right before the show.
Designed by Dior's Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the collection draws inspiration from the women who contributed to founder Christian Dior's success. In particular, the creations pay homage to Catherine, sister of Monsieur Dior, a member of the French Resistance, who has been described as "a brave and unique woman". Other women as inspiration include Dior's "leopard woman" – Mitzah Bricard, Dior's childhood friend – Suzanne Luling, and Dior studio director – Raymonde Zehnacker.
The collection embodies Dior's strong contemporary spirit during its transition to feminism - with a range of pleated dresses, black and white jackets and inspired coats from men's clothing that reimagines the iconic Bar Jacket. There are also men's jackets and ultra-short skirts, biker shorts combined with a white blouse and black tie, 3D embroidered knit tops and zodiac motifs. A range of evening gowns specially designed for the show also featured Dior's iconic silhouettes, recreated through bold asymmetrical cuts.
For this collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri reimagined the Dior family jute bags as a "symbol of sisterhood". With the motto "L'union fait la force" (strength from unity), the designer has taken uniform shapes to create bold designs. The white shirt, tie, and copper-gold pleated skirt evoke thoughts of a group of rebellious schoolgirls. Likewise, biker shorts, jackets and chunky boots further accentuate Chiuri's feminist spirit.
The result is a collection that evokes inspiration and powerful concepts such as commitment, solidarity and sharing. In sync with this theme, Dior chose the campus of Ewha Womans University as the performance scene. Designed by French architect Dominique Perrault, Ewha's campus centerpiece is located in the trendy Sinchon district. It's no surprise that this university - one of the most prestigious women's education institutions in the world - is the perfect space to showcase Maria Grazia Chiuri's latest creations.
The Dior show is part of a larger collaboration between Ewha and the French fashion House. After the show, the university will join Dior's Women@Dior program, which has been running since 2017. In its first collaboration, Ewha is said to have selected six women who will receive the incident. from luxury brands. “This year, the fashion house is forging a new close relationship with Korea,” said Pietro Beccari, President and CEO of Dior.
With a pop-up store in Seoul slated to open on the anniversary of Dior's Fall 2022 show, we can expect much more from the French brand and an exciting partnership. with Korean celebrities and organizations.
